PEEKING INTO THE PAST: North Albemarle School

In April 1942 the Wiscassett School building, that had been located at the corner of North First Street and Glenn Street, was lost in a fire. The community had hoped to rebuild the school but due to World War II, they were not allowed to replace it. Several years after the war, the nearby Efird School was overcrowded so a new school was finally allowed to be built to replace both the Wiscassett and Efird schools. The city completed what became North Albemarle School in the fall of 1949. At the time it was considered to be one of the most modern schools in the entire state. When the school opened it was already considered to be filled to capacity with about 500 students spread over grades one through eight. The school played an integral part of the Albemarle City and later Stanly County school systems until it was closed in June 2011.
