Golfer Grant Sellers compiled a total 15-under-par to take home the top purse of $20,000 at this past weekend’s Albemarle Championship at the Sound Golf Links at Albemarle Plantation.
The GPro Tour Albemarle Championship was held Thursday through Saturday and featured 40 young golfers from the southeast and one from as far away as Phoenix, Arizona, all competing for shares of a total purse of $46,650.
Sellers, who is 25 and a resident of McBee, South Carolina, finished Thursday’s opening round with a 6-under-Par 72. A bogey on hole 12 deprived him of a 7-under total for the round. Sellers finished round two with a score of 67 and round three with a score of 68, which included an eagle on hole 12. Sellers completed 10 of his tournament birdies on the front nine, while the remaining five he achieved on the back half of the course.
Following Sellers in second place was Austin Duncan, 24, of York, South Carolina. He finished the tournament with scores of 70, 66 and 66 to take home a $6,000 purse. Finishing third was Erik Edwards, 25, of Louisville, Kentucky. Edwards completed the three rounds with scores of 67, 68 and 69 and earned a $4,000 prize.
According to a press release, the GPro Tour is a Carolinas-based developmental tour that stages two- and three-day tournaments in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Founded in 2013 by Gary Hough, a former professional tour golfer, the GPro Tour is designed to appeal to young professional players to help them “develop their game and at lower entry fees.” To date, the GProTour has paid out more than $7 million in prize money, the release states.
