Outstanding Senior Citizens named for service to the community

Two Albert Lea residents were recognized for their efforts to give back to the community Wednesday as they were named Outstanding Senior Citizens at the Freeborn County Fair.

Joe LaFrance was recognized for his role as the lead cook of the food ministry program at First Lutheran Church, which provides free weekly meals to people in need.

Lioba Forman has helped fundraise for local charities for decades, collects eye glasses and other items to support the community as part of a local Lions Club and was even honored as the District Lion of the Year.

“The actions of both of these individuals exemplify the spirit of service and compassion, making them a true pillar of support and inspiration for us all,” said Konrad Hawkinson with the Albert Lea Convention and Visitors Bureau, who presented the awards.

LaFrance, who previously worked as a hotel manager, thanked the person who made his nomination and recognized what he called his support group at the church who help make the meals possible. Without them, it couldn’t be done, he said.

The program serves 180 people every Thursday night at the church.

According to the nomination, the meal program with LaFrance and a large group of volunteers began in June of 2020 and continues to give. The program is 100% funded by grants and donations.

The nomination form for Forman stated Forman, a former educator, volunteers and raises funds to send underprivileged girls to camp through the Tri-T organization and also shops with them for new camp clothes, even organizing a pre-camp fashion show for them.

She helps with foster care needs, providing a new backpack of supplies and clothes for children entering foster care, and also volunteers at the Senior Center and for meals at Senior Tower occasionally.

She hosts traveling faith members to her home, has been a part of fundraising for the inclusive playground the last two years and is always giving to the community of her time, talents, passion and funds, the nomination stated.

“Lioba listens and discovers ways to help people,” the nomination stated. “Then she gets out there and does it. She’s tireless and generous.”

Hawkinson said Forman’s strong commitment to service has profoundly shaped the community.

Both winners will receive complimentary tickets to the Minnesota State Fair
