The Minnesota Capitol and the governor’s residence are under tighter security protocols now that Tim Walz is the Democratic vice presidential candidate.

A Capitol hallway leading to the governor’s office was cordoned off on Monday morning while Walz interviewed candidates for judicial appointments. There was also an enhanced security presence throughout the building.

Eastcliff — the University of Minnesota-owned home where the Walz family is staying while the governor’s residence undergoes construction — is also under heightened restrictions for visitors and passersby.

Additional security barriers were added next to the white picket fence around the St. Paul home and signs were posted outside noting that guns and other weapons are restricted in the area. Eastcliff overlooks the Mississippi River; the Walz family has been living there since last summer.

Walz qualifies for U.S. Secret Service protection as presidential candidate Kamala Harris’ running mate.

The governor is expected to spend much of his time traveling across the country to campaign for the Democratic ticket. He has visited more than a dozen states since being selected as a candidate for vice president.
