Longtime resident Sonja Buckmeier is running for the Minnesota House in District 30A, which encompasses the communities of Otsego, Albertville, St. Michael, Hanover, and Rockford Township. She has lived in St. Michael more than 25 years where she has been an active volunteer and worked with youth through various activities and in local schools.

“I am running to represent House District 30A in the Minnesota Legislature because I believe in the strength of our growing, diverse community. I’ve experienced how much we can accomplish when we set aside our differences and work together. I will bring this same collaborative approach to the legislature,” Buckmeier said. “I will advocate for local needs including education from early childhood to career training, critical infrastructure, sustainable public safety, and accessible and affordable health care. Together we can continue to build a safe, supportive, healthy, and inclusive community where all residents are respected and have access to the resources needed to support their families.”

Buckmeier grew up in the small town of Eagle Lake just outside Mankato. She earned a business administration degree from Mankato State University. As a first-generation graduate, Buckmeier said she values public education and the impact equitable education access has for all students. Today, she lives in St. Michael with her husband. Together they raised four children. Since moving to St. Michael, she has connected with others through her volunteerism and employment, which include:

•St. Michael-Albertville School District substitute teacher and classroom volunteer.

•St. Michael-Albertville community bond and levy committee member.

    •St. Michael Elementary PTO board.

•Senior class All Night Grad Party planning committee treasurer.

•Crow River Girl Scouts troop leader and service unit board.

•Cub Scout Pack 767 and Hanover Troop 563 wreath coordinator.

•St. Michael United Soccer team manager, board member, treasurer.

•Alleluia! Lutheran Church nursery, confirmation, service, and food distribution volunteer.

•Prudential Insurance licensed agent: accident, health, casualty, life, and property.

    •College Inside Track, office administrator.

Buckmeier said she now wants to use her experiences to help improve the lives of all Minnesotans. She is launching the Sonja Buckmeier for State House campaign on Monday, April 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. at St. Michael City Hall chamber room, 11800 Town Center Drive NE, St. Michael.
