The dust storm first started as a snow squall in western New Mexico as a cold front moved through the state from Arizona. Snow and blowing snow were first seen in Grants and Gallup, along with strong winds. As the front started moving toward Albuquerque, it picked up a significant amount of dust. This prompted officials to issue a dust storm warning for the city of Albuquerque. The wall of dust was seen on the KOAT Sandia Crest Action Cam as it blew through the city. The wind knocked out power for thousands in Albuquerque and hundreds of others in New Mexico. Damage was seen throughout the state, including in Rio Communities where a trampoline was picked up and became entangled with power lines in the area. A tree had also fallen on top of a restaurant in Los Lunas. No injuries were reported in that incident and the restaurant was closed at the time. The dust storm moved through eastern New Mexico, causing power outages for many. Winds as strong as 84 miles per hour were seen in Roswell.
