    NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Check out community events around New Mexico from July 5-11.

    New Mexico

    • July 5 Dark Skies, Bright Stars – Park rangers at Abo will provide a guided pueblo and mission program. It begins at 7:30 p.m.
    • July 5-7 The Roswell UFO Festival – This annual Roswell event will feature vendors, music, events, and fun for the whole family.
    • July 6 Edgewood’s 25th Year Celebration – Edgewood’s 25th anniversary will be held at Venus Park beginning at 6:00 p.m.
    • July 6 Taos Pop-up Market – This event at Challups Pizza in Taos begins at 10:00 a.m.
    • July 6 Slime Time – This slimy exploration into the world of play, art, and science begins at 12:00 p.m. at Meow Wolf Santa Fe. Tickets are $7.
    • July 6 Freedom Health Bash – At TBE Crossfit in Los Lunas from 4-6 p.m. there will be music, food, a silent auction, a cornhole tournament, giveaways, and more.
    • July 6 Saturday Farmers Market – The Santa Fe Farmers’ Market is open year-round on Saturdays in the heart of the Santa Fe Railyard.
    • July 7 Tattoo Flash Fundraiser for Ruidoso – CZER Tattoos & Art LLC in Rio Rancho is holding a fundraiser for the people of Ruidoso. $100 and $200 designs will be available
    • July 7 Sunday Chess Club – Popolo’s Games in Taos will host this free chess club open to all ages at 1:00 p.m.
    • July 9 Swing on the Plaza – This event at the Plaza De Las Cruces begins at 7:00 p.m. with a free swing dance lesson and an open dance at 8:00 p.m.

    Albuquerque Notices

    🔶 Museum of Nuclear Science and History opening new exhibit – The National Museum of Nuclear Science and History is unveiling a new exhibit: Mission Aerospace. The new exhibit is a multi-layered, interactive exploration of aviation history and aerospace milestones. The new exhibit opens June 22 and runs through October 6.

    🔶 Albuquerque has more flexibility in addressing homeless camps after U.S. Supreme Court ruling – The decision applies to a case in initiated in Oregon, but has implications for Albuquerque’s ability to tackle encampments. Recently, interactions with encampments have been primarily handled by Albuquerque Community Safety, rather than the police department.

    🔶 New Mexico looking for input on Paseo del Volcan road project – An online community survey is helping shape the ongoing project. The big picture is that the state is working to eventually connect Paseo del Volcan to I-40 as a way to bypass Albuquerque traffic.

    🔶 City adding new bike lanes, more safety features to Louisiana Boulevard – The city said Louisiana will be restriped to create new bike lanes, and Intelligent Transportation Systems will be added to improve communication between traffic signals. The changes are part of the City’s Vision Zero program, aimed at reducing pedestrian deaths and creating safer streets.

    🔶 Albuquerque adds electric vans to ABQ Ride – By adding five new electric vans, ABQ Ride is trying to get to zero emissions by 2040. The new vans are Ford E-Transit vans, with seven-person seating. They also include wheelchair accessibility and will provide transportation options beyond the usual city bus routes.

    🔶 Summer program helps Albuquerque students prepare for next school year – Horizons Albuquerque is helping under-resourced students in grades 1 through 11 with the goal of advancing educational equity. Students not only focus on academics, but also learn skills like guitar playing, robotics, and how to swim.

    🔶 Bernalillo County offering free movie nights at local community centers – The free movie nights will include family-friendly films like 101 Dalmatians and Wonka. The movies will be shown on weekends starting at sundown. Gates open at 7:00 p.m., and moviegoers are welcome to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and snacks.

    🔶 Free summer lunch program returns in Bernalillo County – Beginning June 3, free lunch will be served daily to children at different locations around Bernalillo County. Children must be between the ages of 1 to 18 years old to receive a meal. Meals must be consumed at the meal site (except for non-congregate sites), all meals are first come, first served, and participants must receive the entire meal.

    🔶 Explora hosting Mosaic of Marks, Words, and Material exhibition – The exhibition runs from May 15 – August 16. The exhibit will include an art studio where young visitors, their families, and educators can explore hands-on mark-making materials.

    🔶 New Mexico State Fair holding auditions to sing the National Anthem – The live auditions will be at the Boxcar Stage from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the EXPO New Mexico on August 6. To audition live, you must sign up by August 5.

    New Mexico Notices

    🔶 Free summer food service program for children resumes in New Mexico – The Early Childhood Education and Care Department in New Mexico has begun its free food service for children ages 1-18. The service aims to provide free meals to children during summer break. The department said more than 600 locations in the state are providing free meals through August.

    🔶 Santa Fe National Forest issues partial camping closure order to ‘prevent further resource damage’ – The forest said the closure is needed to “prevent further resource damage caused by an increase in unauthorized long-term camping, vandalism, and trash dumping.” The order went into effect on June 21, 2024, and will expire on Dec. 31, 2025, unless rescinded.

    🔶 FEMA offering temporary housing help for Ruidoso wildfire victims – FEMA will pay for a temporary stay in a hotel or motel for eligible people. The federal agency will pay the cost of a room, as well as taxes and non-refundable pet fees (up to a pre-approved limit).

    🔶 City of Alamogordo cancels July 4 fireworks display – The City of Alamogordo’s annual fireworks extravaganza is canceled this year. The city said that many local agencies are working to battle the Salt and South Fork fires and the city does not want to divert resources from the relief effort or cause additional strain on the first responders.

    🔶 FEMA opens disaster recovery center in Ruidoso, New Mexico – The recovery center is designed to help residents and business owners in Lincoln County, Otero County, and the Mescalero Apache Reservation access federal resources to help with the recovery effort.

    🔶 Santa Fe Fire Department launches Wildfire Preparedness Awareness Campaign – As part of the campaign, the fire department is conducting a free home assessment for homeowners to discuss any needed mitigation on their property to help prevent a wildfire or slow one down.     🔶 Officials ban some fireworks in unincorporated portions of Santa Fe County – The Board of County Commissioners has banned the sale and use of certain types of fireworks within unincorporated portions of Santa Fe County for at least the next 30 days. The resolution does not ban all types of fireworks.

    🔶 Rail Runner offering free rides for students – Students ages 17 and under will be able to ride the Rail Runner Express for free starting June 1. The promotion will run through July 31.

    🔶 Santa Fe hosts ‘Summer Fire Truck Spray Down’ events for kids – The City of Santa Fe Community Engagement Department and Santa Fe Fire Department are providing a free way for kids to cool down this summer. The departments are hosting “Summer Fire Truck Spray Down” events at Swan Park.

    🔶 Summer events in Cloudcroft, New Mexico – From art festivals to local beer, Cloudcroft is inviting visitors all summer. The 51st Annual May Fair Juried Art Fair will be May 25 – 26 at Zenith Park. The Cloudcroft BeerFest will be June 22 – 23. July 13 – 14 at Zenith Park is the Christmas in July Jamboree.
