Friday’s Five Facts

[1] South Fork and Salt Fire update – Fire crews are working to get the south South Fork and Salt fires fully contained. The South Fork Fire is 87% contained and the Salt Fire is at 84% containment. Investigators announced lightning sparked the South Fork Fire, they are still working to determine the cause of the Salt Fire. The Lincoln National Forest has lifted all fire restrictions and is lowering fire danger in the area from ‘High Fire Danger’ to ‘Moderate.’

[2] Syringes in the streets: Who cleans them up in Albuquerque? – Keeping city streets and parks clean of used syringes is a full time job. While there are safe disposal boxes at different locations around the city, many syringes end up scattered across the ground. The Parks and Recreation department staff works to respond to reports of syringes found on the ground. The city says when people report sharp litter to their 311 system they respond within 24 to 48 hours to clean it up.

[3] Cooler, humid and breezier weather – Rain is set to return for more areas in New Mexico today. In The Pecos River Valley flooding thunderstorms will be even more likely today in the burn-scar areas Ruidoso, as well as much of the northeastern plains. Temperatures will reach the upper 70’s in the northern mountains while 80’s, 90’s, and near-100 degree temperatures in other parts of the state.

[4] Mr. Powdrell’s Barbeque says goodbye with July 4th celebration – After decades of business Mr. Powdrell’s Barbeque is officially closed after being open since 1984. Thursday, customers lined up outside the restaurant hours before doors opened for one last chance to order. The restaurant says although it won’t have a physical location, they are exploring different outlets like catering, special events and wholesale distribution of their barbecue sauce.

[5] California man walks thousands of miles for charity, stops in New Mexico – A California man recently crossed through New Mexico as he walks across the entire country. Ranger Kielak’s journey began in March in Myrtle Beach. Kielak is completing this journey to raise money for three nonprofits. He started walking through New Mexico in June and and is now in Arizona. Kielak says he loves New Mexico’s landscape.
