SJSU transfer Moreland brings depth, versatility to Lobo women

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – She isn’t new to the Mountain West, but she is new to the Lobos. San Jose State transfer forward Amhyia Moreland never imagined she’d be playing for the New Mexico during her last trip to the Pit, but now she is ready to make an instant impact.

After spending the last few seasons with the Spartans, Moreland entered the transfer portal. New Mexico assistant coach Nike McClure reached out and Moreland was sold on the idea of being a Lobo and playing in front of one of the most passionate fan bases in the country.

In recent years, UNM has struggled with depth in the front court. Traditionally the Lobos have centered its offense around guard play, but Moreland’s versatility provides help in both areas.

At 6-1, Moreland can play physical down low and score around the basket. She is also coming off a season where she led SJSU in scoring and shot nearly 43% from three-point range.

“She’s really talented,” said UNM head coach Mike Bradbury. “Obviously she can score the ball inside and she’s done that for years. Now she can step out and she’s one of our better three point shooters. So, I think the versatility in her game, with her size, is a big advantage for us.”

“I feel like I will bring, other than post presence, I will bring energy, buckets of course, and hopefully wins,” Moreland said. “I feel like being on the court, playing how I play, is a different story.”
