ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – University of New Mexico experts are weighing in on the Surgeon General’s push for warning labels on social media. Last month, Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy called on Congress to require social media platforms to put warning labels on their apps much like cigarette and alcohol labels.

UNM journalism Professor Carolina Contreras said it won’t be easy and would be difficult to figure out where a digital label would go and whether consumers would actually see it. She said the label warnings are a step in the right direction but it’s only a start. Contreras said the push for labels should be followed by a public awareness campaign and digital literacy programs.
