Kirtland Air Force Base offers glimpse into groundwater cleanup efforts

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Kirtland Air Force Base allowed the public to get a glimpse of their efforts to clean up groundwater polluted by a jet fuel leak that spanned decades. Officials with the Bulk Fuels Facility Cleanup Project showed off water filtration systems, boasted of a significant reduction of contaminates, and assured people that drinking water is safe.

“As of today, we do monthly drinking water well sampling so no drinking water well has ever been impacted due to this release. And with our intra measure and with all of our monitoring, no future impacts are anticipated,” said Ryan Wortman, U.S. Air Force Civil Engineering Center.

The U.S. Air Force first discovered the leak in 1999 and has been trying to remedy the situation ever since.
