Members of the Alcoa High School Key Club hosted a prom for Asbury Place nursing home residents on Saturday.

Umbrellas and beads adorned the rooms at Asbury Place in a masquerade theme reminiscent of Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

Key Club President Caroline Buchanan said she and an Asbury Place event coordinator thought a spring event might give residents something fun to look forward to, so right after Christmas, The Key Club members started to organize the prom.

“We wanted them to have a day where they could dress up and be like princesses and princes and just have something to look forward to,” said Buchanan.

At the event’s start, residents were treated to a tasty-looking spread of snacks and desserts, along with drinks in slim champagne flutes.

Residents chatted and enjoyed their food and drinks while music played in the background.

After a little while, volunteers and Asbury Place employees led residents in several dances that could be performed while seated, including The Macarena and The Y.M.C.A.

Some Key Club volunteers took the hands of residents to encourage a little boogie down.

While Michael Jackson sang over the speakers, one resident reminisced about music that was popular while he was in grade school and the different dance moves that were popular in his youth.

After the dancing, Key Club members passed out pink and yellow roses to each resident, deeming everyone a prom king or queen.
