Rocket test triggers fire at spaceport on Kodiak Island, damages spacecraft
A fire has caused “irrecoverable damage” to a rocket that was initially expected to launch this summer from the Pacific Spaceport Complex-Alaska on Kodiak Island. That’s after a ground test went awry at the facility, which is located on Narrow Cape, near the end of the island’s road system, on the evening of July 19.
Salmon leather workshop highlights significance of environmental stewardship
At the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Visitor's Center Friday, a handful of folks treat salmon skins by rubbing them back and forth along the edge of a weathered wood panel. The somewhat laborious task helps make the skin flexible and is the last step in turning an often discarded part of fish into usable leather.
Melissa Jacobsen to be next Homer City Manager
Melissa Jacobsen is officially stepping into the city manager position. This follows a months-long process to hire a new manager after the Homer City Council terminated its contract with Rob Dumouchel. The council reviewed the contract during a closed, executive session at a special meeting on July 17. They approved it by a resolution at their July 22 meeting.

Construction Report: Maintenance and Operations the “first responders” of the DOT
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - A sinkhole on the Steese highway prompted a swift response from the Alaska Dept. of Transportation (DOT) last week. As potholes, sinkholes and other small damages accrue in our roadways, the go-to solution is not a full rehabilitation of the road, but rather a quick fix to a short section where the damage is located. These repairs are managed within the DOT usually, avoiding the need to contract labor. That work is conducted by the DOT’s maintenance and operations crews.
Peter Pan owner Rodger May bids on some of company's assets
This spring, Peter Pan Seafoods was put into a receivership by a Washington state court after the company became unable to pay its bills. Silver Bay Seafoods stepped in to operate Peter Pan’s plants in Dillingham and in Port Moller. It also put in a bid for some of Peter Pan’s assets. But then, one of Peter Pan’s owners came back with a counter offer—and an accusation: that the bidding process wasn’t fair. He recently scored a victory in that battle.

Anchorage police now have a 45-day deadline to release certain body camera footage
The Anchorage Police Department’s revised body camera policy went into effect Monday. The policy says the chief of police still has discretion to keep recordings of certain incidents from becoming public, but the chief must publicly explain why in detail. Otherwise, the recordings, which may have redactions, should be published within 45 days. Incidents covered include uses of force that lead to serious injuries or deaths, police shootings generally and deaths in custody.
