A 52-year-old Alexandria man suffered a medical emergency and died while in the downtown jail early Saturday morning, according to the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office.

Douglas Obrian Coleman, 52, was found in a dorm of the Rapides Parish Detention Center #1 around 3 a.m., unresponsive and not breathing, reads a news release.

Deputies and medical personnel started helping him, including giving him Narcan in case of a possible drug overdose, it reads. They were still working on him when Acadian Ambulance personnel arrived and took over.

But Coleman could not be revived, and he was pronounced dead around 3:54 a.m.

An investigation started into the death. Coleman had been booked into jail late Friday night on contempt of court charges, as well as a cruelty to animals and a drug charge. He was examined by medical personnel and moved into a dorm, according to the release.

"No evidence of foul play was found during the initial investigation and, based on the evidence gathered at this time, it appears Coleman suffered a tragic medical emergency," it reads.

An autopsy will be performed, and toxicology results are pending. An investigation is continuing.
