Two Alexandria men have been arrested on second-degree murder charges in connection to a June 18 homicide on Overton Street, according to police.

Brandon Jahiem Whipple, 21, and Robert Earl Swafford, 19, both remain in the Rapides Parish Detention Center No. 1 after their arrests. Bail for each was set at $1 million, according to online jail records.

The Alexandria Police Department arrested Whipple on July 11, followed by Swafford on July 12. They are the second and third people arrested in the shooting that killed one person in the 2700 block of Overton Street.

Officers had chased a vehicle with multiple people in it, but didn't catch anyone when they fled from the car at Monroe Street and Louisiana Avenue.

Robert Drakes III was arrested on June 30 on a charge of second-degree murder. His bail also is set at $1 million and he remains in jail.

Drakes, 21, has requested and been appointed an attorney, but he has no court dates yet, according to online Rapides Parish Clerk of Court records. He also faces an unrelated charge of armed robbery with a pretrial conference set for Aug. 21.

Whipple also was booked on a probation violation charge. No bail is set on that charge. He pleaded guilty in October to a felony charge of aggravated assault with a firearm and a misdemeanor drug charge, but was sentenced to three years probation.
