"Weekend Of The Cross" volunteering to help the handicapped
Volunteers from across the state have made it to Alexandria to help make a difference in the central Louisiana community. Around 140 Weekend of the Cross volunteers are being housed at First United Methodist Church in Alexandria. The volunteer team, containing youth and adults from all four corners of the state, are in town to build wheelchair ramps, and give 160 wheelchairs to those in the community who need them most. Reverend and volunteer Heather Sullivan explained what they plan to do, as well as her motivation for participating.
Police investigate shooting after victim admitted to hospital
ALEXANDRIA, La. (WNTZ) – On Saturday, July 20, 2024, at approximately 10:50 pm the Alexandria Police Department responded to a local hospital in reference to a person that had been shot. The shooting took place in the area of Levin Street and Essie Street. The shooting victim sustained moderate injuries.

NSU will introduce Genovese Tuesday
Northwestern State University will hold a press conference at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 23 ,to introduce James. T. Genovese as the university’s 21st president. The event will be in the Sylvan Friedman Student Union Ballroom. All in the community are invited. Genovese, who has served as an associate justice on the Louisiana Supreme Court, was named the university’s president July 18 and will assume office in August. Tuesday’s program will include recognition of local and regional elected officials, figures from Genovese’s personal life, special presentations to the newly elected president and comments from Genovese.
Lifelong Natchitoches resident celebrates 100th birthday
Family and friends gathered to celebrate the 100th birthday for lifelong Natchitoches resident Laura Lavespere Saturday on July 20. She’s lived in the City of Lights since she was a teenager. She worked for years at Northwestern State University as a controller for approximately 30 years. She later worked at Gwen’s Ladies Wear until she retired to babysit her only granddaughter. She was married to Eugene Lavespere Sr. until his death in 1998. She has one son, Eugene Lavespere Jr.

Man shot dead in 7th Ward home identified by New Orleans coroner
A man who was killed in a recent New Orleans shooting was identified Monday morning by the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office. Eric Gary, 50, was shot and killed in a 7th Ward home in the 1400 block of North Claiborne Avenue last Wednesday, according to the New Orleans Police Department. When New Orleans police responded to the call at 2:19 a.m., they found Gary with multiple gunshot wounds.
