UPMC Installs ‘Hope Bell’ for Those Facing Cancer in Infusion Centers Across Central Pennsylvania
The UPMC Pinnacle Foundation recently installed seven “Hope Bells” in UPMC Hillman Cancer Center infusion centers in central Pennsylvania, an alternative to the traditional end-of-treatment bell that allows patients to celebrate various miles in their journey, from regaining appetite to attending family events. The Hope Bell was conceptualized by Aleecia Munchel, BSN, RN, a UPMC infusion nurse, in collaboration with her late patient Barbara Gutshall, who passed away after a courageous fight with breast cancer.
Local Disability Advocate Receives International Honor
A State College disability advocate whose fundraising efforts have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars has received an international honor. Emily Steffensmeier was recently named to Diversability’s 2024 D-30 Disability Impact List. Steffensmeier, who has lived with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) and dysautonomia for 26 years, started Rowe’s Research Runners in 2017 to raise money for Dr. Peter Rowe’s Chronic Fatigue and Related Disorders Clinic at Johns Hopkins Children’s Hospital.
