ALEXANDRIA, Va. ( DC News Now ) — The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) provided an update Tuesday regarding an ongoing investigation into three dogs who died while being boarded at the PetSmart PetsHotel in Potomac Yard.

Blue and Lily were both cremated, so AWLA is unable to determine their exact causes of death.

Lily stayed at the PetsHotel from June 18 through June 22. On the 22nd, a PetSmart employee took her to the emergency vet after she showed signs of illness and medical distress.

After the vet contacted the owner and did what they could for Lily, they discharged her. The vet also recommended Lily go somewhere other than back to the PetSmart boarding facility due to her older age. Lily was 16 years old at the time.

Lily stayed with a friend of the owner’s in the days after the vet visit.

Lily passed on June 26 after returning home with the owner.

AWLA said they were still waiting to hear back from the attending veterinarian for Blue and Lily to discuss their examinations and findings.

“Given all the information we have currently, we do not suspect any active cruelty or intent to harm animals on the part of any PetSmart employees. However, this continues to be an ongoing investigation. We will release additional information when it becomes available,” AWLA wrote in the release.
