The native of Alexandria, Virginia holds the record for United States sprinters in the 200-meter sprint and trails only two Jamaicans – Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake – for the all-time world record. Lyles is also tied with Ronnie Baker for the sixth-fastest time ever recorded by an American (17th overall) in the 100-meter dash.
At the Tokyo Games in 2021, Lyles won the bronze medal in the 200-meter sprint. He has since won the gold medal in every 200-meter competition since: the 2022 World Championships, the 2023 World Championships and set an Olympics trial record last month to make Team USA once again.
Lyles also won the gold in the 100-meter sprint at the 2023 World Championships with a personal best and matched that time to win the 100-meter final at the Olympic trials.
Here's how the two sprinters stack up by personal bests in their events.
100-meter sprint
Bolt: 9.58 seconds (1st in the world)
Lyles: 9.83 seconds (T-17)
200-meter sprint
Bolt: 19.19 seconds (1st)
Lyles: 19.31 seconds (3rd)
4x100-meter relay
Bolt (with Team Jamaica): 36.84 seconds (1st)
Lyles (with Team USA): 37.10 seconds (T-3rd)
Bolt is still far and away the fastest man the world has ever seen, but Lyles has made a name for himself on the world stage, particularly in the 200-meter sprint.
In 2023, Lyles won the gold medal in the 100-meter, 200-meter and 4x100-meter events at the World Championships. Those medals made him a six-time world champion in total and the first man to complete the sprint treble at the World Championships since Bolt did it in 2015.
Noah Lyles has run as fast as 23.17 miles per hour, which he did in the 200-meter sprint at the 2023 U.S. Championships. The American sprinter has also hit 22.76 miles per hour in the 100-meter sprint.

Though the 200-meter sprint is Lyles' marquee event, he also qualified to run in the 100 in the Paris Olympics.
Lyles' personal best in the event is 9.83 seconds, which is tied for the 17th-fastest effort of all time in the 100.
