Fireworks combined with a warm and humid airmass led to unhealthy air quality for locations in Michigan last night. Similar conditions are expected again tonight. Last night, an abundance of fireworks were set off throughout the state to celebrate the July 4 holiday. This occurred during a temperature inversion, which is when the temperature increases with height. This usually occurs at night and is called a radiation inversion. Temperature inversions act as a lid on the atmosphere, trapping whatever is underneath it at the surface. Little to no mixing can occur while there is an inversion.
