The Alhambra City Council on Monday authorized a staff to start accepting bids from firms to design a permanent dog park.

The future canine recreation facility will be located near the former Paw-Pup Dog Park pilot project area at 630 S. Almansor St., next to the Alhambra Golf Course.

“The Alhambra City Council is thrilled to see this initiative advancing,” Mayor Sasha Renée Pérez said in a statement. “Alhambra residents have long expressed their desire for a permanent dog park, particularly following the success of our pilot program. Now, we are able to make this a permanent feature for our residents and their furry friends!”

Last fall, the city hosted a temporary pilot “Paw-Pup Dog Park” for two months. The pop-up program fielded public input regarding a permanent dog park with a survey, that earned more than 1,300 responses, according to the city. About 99% of survey-takers supported a permanent dog park in Alhambra.

Next steps entail city staff to find a professional engineering and design services firm to craft plans and specifications for the Alhambra Dog Park Project, officials said. Expected dog park features include trees, synthetic turf, walking paths, a restroom, secure double fencing, benches, shade structures and dog play elements.

Proposals for the engineering and design services contract must be submitted to the Parks and Recreation Department no later than 5 p.m. Monday, July 22.
