Mega Millions Increases Ticket Price to Enhance Prizes and Attract More Players

The cost to play Mega Millions will soon increase from $2 to $5, but lottery officials believe players won't be discouraged by the change. The price hike, starting in April, aims to improve jackpot odds and offer larger prizes, leading to more frequent winners.

Mega Millions is sold in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands, with Powerball available in similar locations. While Powerball’s ticket price will remain unchanged at $2, Mega Millions is raising prices to differentiate itself and attract more players.

The goal is to boost revenue and provide additional funds for state lotteries. With fewer people buying tickets, the price increase is expected to encourage more participation, even as jackpots grow. Lower interest rates may slightly reduce the advertised jackpot figures, but the focus remains on creating more opportunities for players to win life-changing prizes.
