Father Amesse Fights CRA Decision Over Charitable Donation Credits

Father Stephen Amesse, rector of St. Patrick Basilica, is contesting a decision by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) in tax court after his claims for charitable donation credits were denied. Each year, he donates a substantial portion of his salary to the basilica, believing it's essential for a pastor to set an example.

For the 2022 tax year, the CRA requested proof of his donations, which he provided through church envelopes, bank cheques, and a spreadsheet from the church’s accountant. Despite this, he received a notice demanding repayment of approximately $5,700 due to the CRA claiming the receipts lacked necessary details.

Amesse argued that the envelopes served as valid proof, uniquely identifying his contributions. He has faced significant frustration with the CRA’s lack of response and clarity. While he has successfully submitted his 2023 donations, the experience has left him uncertain and compelled to represent himself in court.
