Arizona Department of Environmental Quality to award sustainable businesses and organizations

    2021-08-20

PHOENIX, AZ - Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, or ADEQ, acknowledges organizations and businesses implementing environmental programs by launching the Voluntary Environmental Stewardship Program, or VESP.

VESP supports the efforts of businesses and organizations in maintaining environmental health by providing tools, strategies, and opportunities to reduce the costs required. It rewards them with many incentives based on their achievement tier, including Copper, Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.

In particular, Copper and Bronze tier awardees will receive a certificate of recognition, a listing on the ADEQ web page, and an invitation to attend the Voluntary Environmental Stewardship Conference.

Those achieving Silver, Gold, and Platinum tier will gain one benefit more than copper and bronze awardees: they can request any options provided by ADEQ and will receive additional benefits based on the scale of improvements they have made.

To acquire recognition from ADEQ regarding the program, businesses and organizations shall meet specific requirements to progress through the award level. For example, the Bronze tier awardee shall not show any environmental violations for the past three years while joining the program

To escalate to the Silver tier, they shall demonstrate improvements in at least one aspect of four sustainability areas, including Upstream, Input, Non-Product Output, and Downstream. There will be new specific requirements to proceed to the Gold and Platinum tier.

In monitoring their efforts, ADEQ requires those from the Bronze to Platinum tier to report every April 1 of each year. Each level has its specific reporting procedures can be seen here for details.

Interested businesses and organizations shall complete the application form and submit it to vespapply@azdeq.gov.
