The city of Surprise accommodates children's car safety by launching Child Passenger Safety Program

    2021-08-21

SURPRISE, AZ - The city of Surprise encourages residents to install children's car seats in their cars by launching the Surprise Public Safety Child Passenger Safety Program.

The program intends to implement the Arizona State law for Child Car Seats. The law requires children under eight years old and below 4’9” tall shall use a child restraint system approved by federal standards at the back seat. There is a fine of up to $176 to those violating the law.

Residents can visit the Surprise Fire Station 303 at 15440 N Cotton Lane, located on the northwest corner of Greenway Road and Cotton Lane. The fire department conducts the car seat inspection from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on the first and third Tuesday and every third Saturday.

Citizens can directly visit the site, but it is preferable to make an appointment before their visit by calling 623-222-5000. They shall take their children with them or show height and weight measurements to the officer if they are not sure to drive them safely. If any, the fire department advises them to bring their vehicle and the car seat manual.

The 30-to-45-minute session will give instructions regarding the children's car seat, including the design and the function, proper fit and installation in their vehicle, and how to buckle their children in the seat correctly. They may not worry about being unable to install it, as the technician will assist them.

The city advises citizens not to bring a used car seat, especially if they don’t know its records whether it was involved in a car accident or not. Expiration dates are also a concern as those car seats shall not be used after 6 to 10 years of use.
