Arizona Emergency Information Network prepare go-kit tips

    2021-08-22

PHOENIX, AZ - The Arizona government has made great efforts throughout the year to ensure that its residents are always ready to face emergency situations. One of their many efforts is by sharing how to prepare an emergency go-kit.

In Arizona, a lot of natural disasters could happen at any given time. Whether it's a wildfire in northern Arizona or flash flooding in Phoenix, during that time of emergency, you need to be ready to immediately leave your home while having enough supplies to survive for several days after the emergency.

For that kind of situation, an emergency go-kit has to be ready in your home. An emergency go-kit is a collection of essential goods that you and your family may require in case of a disaster.

The kit should be easily transportable, periodically replenished, and take into account the needs of anybody who could shelter or evacuate with you in an emergency.

Prepare supplies for your house, work, and car because you never know where you'll be when an emergency strikes.

What you need to take into account when preparing an emergency go-kit:

    1. Include essential food, water, medical supplies, and other necessities in your kit. Make sure it will last from three days to two weeks.
    2. Choose foods that could last without a refrigerator and don't need to be prepared using water before eating. Avoid salty foods because they will make you feel thirsty faster.
    3. Consider the needs of people with food allergies and dietary restrictions, as well as babies, toddlers, and the elderly.
    4. Remember to bring a flashlight, a first aid kit, extra batteries, a manual can opener, local maps, a cell phone with chargers and a backup battery.
    5. To protect yourself and your family from disease, add products like face masks, hand sanitizer, and sanitizing wipes to your kit.

Put your whole emergency kit in one or two easy-to-carry containers, such as a plastic bin, camping backpack, or duffel bag, and keep it in a designated place that is known by the whole family.
