Tips to Build a Landscape at Home

    2021-08-23

Imagine having a landscape in your home; it will be a place for your kids to play and your pets to run around while sweeping your sight towards plants. On the other hand, it shall also run rainwater off while carrying no pollutants to protect local waterways. How to build such a landscape at the same time? Here are some tips for you.

    • Manage your soil

It’s better to avoid steep slopes as it will increase the potential for erosion and runoff. If you can’t avoid using slopes as your design, apply plants with deeper root zones to stabilize soil structure.

Then, to improve your soil condition and save water usage, you can use mulches, including hardwood chips, leaves, and grass clippings. Remember, don’t apply them too much, or they will restrict the soil from absorbing water.

Soil amendments can also be an option to maintain the soil moisture, and simple lawn aerators help improve water flows and reduce erosion.

    • Choose appropriate plants and their placements

Native plants can be a choice as they are adaptable to local soil, don’t need much fertilizer, and are more resistant to pests and diseases. If your design includes turfgrass, use a low-water-use one to save water.

Some plants may have various needs in sun exposure and water needs. Grouping plants with similar characteristics will provide you the ease in treating them.

    • Maintaining your lawn

You may have moisture soil for your plants, but regular watering will keep them alive. Replacing mulch and removing weed is also necessary to keep your desired plant receiving adequate water.

To reduce nutrients being carried away by water, it’s better to minimize or not use fertilizers at all. Grass clippings from the mowing process can be a natural source of fertilizer and defend your lawn from weeds.
