    City of Scottsdale holds "We The People" Constitution Day Contest

    SCOTTSDALE. AZ - The City of Scottsdale will be holding the “We The People Constitution Day Contest” to celebrate the United State Constitution that was signed on September 17, 1787. Mayor David Ortega of Scottsdale stated that the Contest aims to give the understanding of citizen engagement into the government.

    This We The People Constitution Day Contest gives the chance for everyone to learn about the establishment of a constitutional democratic republic to protect everyone’s freedom and the law of justice.

    This contest is for students from grades 1 through 12 and allows the participants to submit different entries including essays, art pieces, writing and performing an informative 3-minute original song or video, or a 3-minute podcast.

    The themes are different for each grade group. For the first group that consists of students of grades 1 through 5, participants need to discuss the meaning of the First Amendment for them as U.S. citizens. The word count for the essay is 250 to 350.

    The second group is students of grades 6 through 8. They need to discuss one of the Constitutional Amendments and the benefits of the Constitution for the U.S. citizen and its safety. The word count for the essay is 500 to 650.

    Grade 9 through 12 will be included in the last group and need to discuss the changes of the Amendments and their benefits to protect the democratic republic and why the changes need our individual participation to carry our responsibilities for the society. The word count for the essay is 1000 to 1200.

    The judges will come from the American Association of University Women-Arizona and Mayor Ortega will choose a Grand Prize WInner. For other information such as rules and due dates, visit here https://www.scottsdaleaz.gov/council/constitution-contest.
