"Longing" is the second single from the upcoming album of Hyeonseon Baek. It sings hope with Baek's Mellow vocal, floating with the pianist Kevin Hays's piano, and Bassist Linda May Han Oh and Drummer Jochen Rueckert put their gentle, rhythmic charms on it. In the later part of the song, Baek does the expressive scat over the closing vamp.

On her first two albums, vibraphonist Patricia Brennan worked with a quartet comprised of three percussion instruments, herself on vibes and marimba, joined by percussionist Mauricio Herrera and drummer Marcus Gilmore, with a bassist Kim Cass. Momentum in large part, is the name of the game. For Breaking Stretch she expands her musical universe, adding trumpeter Adam O'Farrill and saxophonists Mark Shim and Jon Irabagon. This proved a good move; her musical universe in this septet setting has an energy similar to the universe, a billion or so years after the Big Bang.

Even though he was born and raised in Tel Aviv, Israel, composer, saxophonist and educator Eyal Vilner is well-versed in the origins and history of American jazz, especially as they pertain to the Swing Era, big bands and the largely black jazz experience in Harlem and elsewhere. Those interests converge on Swingin' Uptown, on which Vilner's excellent big band swings its way through sixteen impressive charts, several of which were inspired by Harlem's remarkble jazz narrative.

From the new album "April & Joanie Sing!" on Southport Records, vocalists April Aloisio and Joanie Pallatto sing a duet in perfect harmony on "I FEEL FREE", written by Peter Brown and Jack Bruce of the band Cream. Their arrangement with guitarist Fareed Haque breathes new life into this classic rock song, and is given a new free feeling on this recording from 2024. Aloisio, a sensuous and passionate soprano and Pallatto, a sultry and inviting alto, agree that there are times when they can't tell each other apart — sharing in harmony, scat and improvisation.
