Three People Arrested for Assault in Red Oak
(Red Oak) Three people face assault charges following an incident in Red Oak. According to the press release, the charges stem from an incident in the 1800 block of N. 4th Street on Saturday night. As a result of the investigation, Officers arrested 35-year-old Micaela Morales and 35-year-old Douglas Walter Penry, both from Stanton, and 40-year-old Arthur Finton McCarthy of Ankeny.
Proposed homeless ordinance for Des Moines is unethical
Jason Benell lives in Des Moines with his wife and two children. He is a combat veteran, former city council candidate, and president of Iowa Atheists and Freethinkers. Many are concerned about the direction the Des Moines City Council is taking, particularly concerning the homeless population—some of our least fortunate neighbors and fellow citizens. This approach lays bare the apparent goal of the sitting councilors who support this policy: they do not believe unhoused folks deserve the same level of respect and dignity as other citizens. They are willing to cast them outside of the Des Moines city limits, if not completely outside of our society.

The Nov. 6, 1978, edition of the Register’s sister afternoon paper, the Des Moines Tribune, reports on the Nov. 5 fire in the Younkers store at Merle Hay Mall, which kills 10 employees. The fire was the deadliest in Des Moines history. It started in a leaky heating and cooling system before the store opened that Sunday. City of Adel Needs Public’s Help for Beggars Night Date
The City of Adel is asking for residents’ feedback to help nail down a date for the annual Halloween celebration. Halloween is still a few months away, but the City of Adel is looking to secure the day to host their trick or treating event. According to the city, there are three suggested dates to choose from for Beggars Night 2024. The proposed dates are Saturday, October 26th, Thursday, October 31st, and Saturday, November 2nd.
RAGBRAI in Indianola “Just Eat It” Wednesday
RAGBRAI will stop in Indianola this Wednesday, day four of the annual event. Indianola has been designated as a “meeting town” in between the overnight stops of Winterset and Knoxville, and the theme for the Indianola stop will be “Just Eat It.” The current proposed route has the riders entering the city on Hwy 92, turning north and traveling through the downtown Indianola square, where the proposed activities including food trucks, vendors, entertainment, a bike shop, safety tent, and hydration station will be located as riders then make their way south onto Highway 65/69 towards Milo.
Canton High School graduate, a retired U.S. Army colonel, named deputy director of federal office
WASHINGTON − U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) Director Hugh Nathanial Halpern recently named Brian Pearl, a native of Canton, Mo., as the agency’s deputy director. Pearl graduated from Canton R-V High School. He will serve in the agency’s second highest-ranking position as its chief operating officer. In addition to other responsibilities, Pearl will oversee GPO’s operations division, which includes plant operations, security and intelligent documents, official journals of government and customer services. These business units are responsible for GPO’s most important products including the U.S. passport, Congressional Record, Federal Register, White House print materials, secure federal credentials and other congressional and executive branch products and services.
Panora City Council to Discuss Temporary Storage Containers
The Panora City Council will meet in regular session Monday. The Council will consider for approval the second reading of an ordinance adding a chapter on portable storage containers to City Code, a resolution allowing possession and consumption of alcohol in designated areas for events during Panorama Days and a request to utilize a hydrant or firetruck to fill a dunk tank at Michael Mills Park during Panorama Days. They will also discuss the city being the fiscal agent for the Panora Chamber’s Main Street audio project, merit increases for two city employees, the 2024 Southeast Load Transfer Electric project and an emergency medical services first responder transport agreement.
