Carnation Festival kicks off 2024 events with 'Royal Afternoon'

Youngsters in the Alliance area can get their chance to dress and act like royalty on Sunday at Glamorgan Castle .

The first event of the 2024 Greater Alliance Carnation Festival – A Royal Afternoon at the Castle – will run 3 to 5 p.m. at Glamorgan Castle.

Children can dress the part with party attire or even their favorite princess as they make their own crown and get photos taken with the 2023 Carnation Queen and her court . They’ll also receive a free coloring sheet to take home.

Children can attend at any time during the open house-style event, which also will include a raffle for a princess tent or a tea set.

The event is $10 per child, and no registration is required.

Glamorgan Castle is at 200 Glamorgan St. in Alliance.

Food Fest musical acts announced

The musical acts have been announced for the Carnation Food Fest .

The festival will be Aug. 1-3 at the University of Mount Union. It will be open 4 to 11 p.m. Aug. 1; and noon to 11 p.m. Aug. 2-3.

Performing from 7 to 10 p.m. Thursday will be Jimmy and the Soul Blazers. On stage 7 to 10 p.m. Aug. 2 will be the Liverpool Lads. And, LaFlavour will play 7 to 10 p.m. Aug. 3.

New festival event Aug. 5

Those who enjoy the Greater Alliance Carnation Festival’s Movie on the Silver Screen event might be excited to see there’s a new event preceding the screening of this year’s film, “Sing.”

Singer and author Jim Gill will present a “Sing-a-thon of Celebrated Songs” at 6 p.m. Aug. 5 at the Silver Park Amphitheatre. The free event will feature that encourages children, parents and grandparents to sing and play together.

Gill has won awards for writing and has released 10 CDs of music, including a popular number he performs in concert called “A Soup Opera.”

Gill received his master’s degree in child development at Ericson Institute of Chicago, with a special emphasis on the study of play.

The evening’s movie, released in theaters in 2016, features the voices of Hollywood stars such as Matthew McConaughey, Scarlett Johansson, Reese Witherspoon and Seth MacFarlane. It details the effort to save a venerable theater by a group of amateur musicians competing in a fundraising contest.

Fishing Derby signups open

Registration is open for the 2024 Carnation Fishing Derby at Kidwell Lake at Silver Park .

The event, which will run 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., is open to children ages 4 to 12. Competitors will be divided by age group – 4- to 6-year-olds; ages 7 to 9; and 10 to 12.

Children taking part must be supervised at all times by a parent or guardian.

Those interested in taking part can download entry forms at carnationfestival.com or the festival’s Facebook page. They can be turned in at Rodman Public Library locations and at Runzo’s Outdoor Sports , 27533 US Route 62 in Beloit.
