Alliance Historical Society is primed for the annual Greater Alliance Carnation Festival , with daily tours of the Mabel Hartzell Historical Home planned.

The tours this year will feature new photo displays in the adjacent Mini-Museum.

The Mini-Museum, which originally was a garage across the alley from the Hartzell Home, opened in 2016 following a major renovation and since then has housed a wide range of historical displays beyond what was part of the original Mabel Hartzell Home which was built in 1867.

The centerpiece of the Mini-Museum, a secure climate-controlled building, is the only remaining automobile built in Alliance in 1910. It also houses a variety of other items focusing on Alliance’s industrial, business and cultural past that have been donated over the years, including a section of the original viaduct bridge and a Hillgreen Lane pipe organ.

Added recently were a number of framed photographs returned to the Historical Society that had been hanging in former Mayor Alan Andreani’s office. Several are now hanging in the Mini-Museum while others have been placed in a large display case.

Visitors will find a new Opera House display, Alliance viaduct photos from 1950s, a new City Band photo, photos of the hospital addition, Alliance Ice and Coal, Midland-Buckeye, downtown and Freedom Plaza plans, the new high school construction, and World War I draftees.

Also featured is a large 1919 photo of the Alliance Chapter of American Red Cross Canteen workers.

Mabel Hartzell Home will be open, as always, the first Saturday of the month, Aug. 3, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. During Carnation Festival week, it will be open daily, Aug. 4 to 9 from 1 to 4 p.m.

The home is at 840 N. Park Ave. The web site is https://alliancehistory.org .
