Warm temperatures and bright sunshine were plentiful Thursday night at the Campus Lakes at University of Mount Union for the opening night of the 2024 Greater Alliance Carnation Festival Food Fest. The good weather brought out a very large crowd, which enjoyed food vendors and a seat in the shade to take in Jimmy and the Soul Blazers performance. Carnation Queen Oneal Everett and her court of Miss Congeniality Lilyan Ronske, 1st Attendant Isabella Hall, 2nd Attendant Alexandra Ritchie and 3rd Attendant Sophia Ayers made their way through the crowd just a few days after they were selected at the July 27 pageant at Alliance High School. The festival moves into high gear this weekend, with Saturday's Community Luncheon featuring the great-great nephew of scarlet carnation creator Levi Lamborn speaking. Mike Lamborn, a winery owner from California's Napa Valley, will stick around to enjoy more of the festival this coming week. Saturday also marks the kickoff of the annual wildly popular Friends of Rodman Library Used Book Sale. The first day is a members-only day, but memberships will be for sale at the door. Don't miss Saturday's Auto Show at Glamorgan Castle; or the children's Pedal Tractor Pull at Mount Union. Sunday will include a Fishing Derby at 8:30 a.m.; the Pump-In and Muster that kicks off at 9 a.m. at Glamorgan Castle; and the Kick-Off Parade at 1 p.m. This also is the final weekend for Shakespeare at the Castle, featuring "Romeo and Juliet. Details on all these events are available at carnationfestival.com .
