My partner and I have set our sights on a goal for this fall that’s both challenging and exciting.

As long as the vaccinations continue to roll out and travel becomes safe and possible once again, we’re planning to walk a section of the Camino de Santiago through Portugal and Spain. Depending on where we decide to start the trek and which route we take, the walk will range from 80-175 miles (130-280 km) and will likely take us 1-2 weeks in total.

Obviously, this is something we need to prepare for. We both enjoy walking but weren’t doing it as much as we wanted to be, so we found a way to motivate ourselves and ensure that we’d make it a regular habit.

That ‘way’ we found was actually an app called StepBet. Their tagline is Motivation to move, and after using it for many months now, I can honestly say that it does provide a strong incentive to get moving more each day!

Not only does it get me active, but it’s also improving other areas of my life at the same time. As a result of spending more time outside in nature, I’ve noticed that my mental health has gotten better and I feel less stressed. Even my relationship with my partner has improved, as we now spend quality alone time together as we go for our nightly walks.

It’s time to bet on your health

If you’re anything like me, you want to be healthy and lead an active lifestyle. You know exercise is important, and you realize you should be moving your body a lot more than you are—but you sometimes still find it challenging to actually follow through. Before I got started with StepBet, I found myself thinking about exercise (as in, “I should really go for a walk tonight instead of watching more TV”) more than I actually exercised.

You may have noticed the word “bet” in the name, and you’re probably wondering what it means and how this whole thing works. Do you really have to bet money? Well … yes. That’s where the motivation part comes from.

I don’t know about you, but I hate losing money—even small amounts. On the other hand, “winning” money always feels great, regardless of how much it is. Finding a dollar or two on the street or someplace unexpected feels like I’ve just won the lottery! It puts a smile on my face and a skip in my step.

And this concept is exactly why StepBet works!

    How it works

Achieve your fitness goals by putting real money on the line. — StepBet

Essentially, you pay to play. You put money down upfront and bet on the fact that you’ll be able to reach your fitness goals. But there’s a big difference between this and gambling. With StepBet, the outcome is entirely within your control.

If you reach your step goal each day for the duration of the game you entered, you’re guaranteed to win. And you don’t just win back the original money you put down; you can also make a profit!

My partner and I have been using the app for around two years now, and between us we’ve probably joined around 30 different games. In all of those games and with all the money we’ve bet, we’ve only ever lost once. That’s how I know it works. I’m not only motivated to not lose money, but I’m also motivated to win extra money!

Granted, it’s not a huge sum you’re winning with each game, but a few dollars on top of your original money back every time you win a game is enough to deter me from giving up and missing my step goal for the day, which would disqualify me. But my winnings aren’t peanuts, either. Since November of 2020, I’ve made just under $60 US in profit, just from walking. Not bad! I’ve almost earned enough to buy myself a new pair of running shoes to replace the ones I’ve worn out.

This is the beauty of it: daily goals sustained over time lead to an active lifestyle, which is the ultimate goal and the reason I signed up in the first place.

    See what works for you

There are all kinds of games you can join that each have their own rules and guidelines, so you can choose what works best for you before signing up.

Some last only two weeks while others last up to eight weeks. Some cost $60 to join while others only cost $10. Some are for StepBet members only, while others are open to anyone. Some games allow for one or two rest days per week, but others, known as “marathons,” have no days off for the entire duration of the game.

StepBet members get even more benefits, such as joining multiple games at once—and therefore having access to three times the winning potential.

It doesn’t matter which game you join or whether you invest in a membership or not. What you’re really investing in is your health, and this app isn’t going to let you off the hook when it comes to changing your habits for the better!

The best part? You’ll earn more money getting in shape with StepBet than you will sticking your money in a savings account—even a high-interest one!
