5th Annual Alberta Fest Triumphs
ALBERTA, Mich. (WLUC) - Cars, crafts, and other fun activities took over the historic village of Alberta on Saturday. The 5th annual Alberta Fest was held at the Ford Center and Forest. The festival featured a car show, craft vendors, live music, and kids’ activities. Activities and vendors were spread throughout the grounds of the environmental education center. The Ford Center’s facilities coordinator John Carroll said it’s a great way for people to learn about what they do.
Keweenaw County shines light on mental health
EAGLE HARBOR, Mich. (WLUC) - A partnership in Keweenaw County spread awareness about an important topic Saturday. Keweenaw Support 4 Healthy Minds held a Shine the Light 5K race in Eagle Harbor. Afterward, the County Sheriff’s Office hosted a public safety day. Attendees learned about mental health issues and their local emergency services. Race proceeds will help the volunteer group host more events to promote mental health. Keweenaw Support 4 Healthy Minds volunteer Michelle Morgan said their goal is to help the community.
Three With CCHA Ties Selected in 2024 NHL Draft
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) saw three current and future student-athletes have their names called during the 2024 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft on Saturday. One is currently enrolled at Michigan Technological University, while two others are commited to join Minnesota State University, Mankato and the University of St. Thomas.
Dave’s BP earns trip to title game to face Houghton Building Supply
HANCOCK — In Portage Lake Little League playoff action Monday, Dave’s BP earned a trip to the championship game Tuesday by toppling Coke, 12-1. In the other semifinal game, Houghton Building Supply defeated L’Anse, 5-2. Blake Heltunen got the win for Dave’s BP by going 6 1/3 innings and striking out 11.

Houghton Beautification Committee, Public Works work to beautify downtown Houghton
HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) - Visitors to Houghton’s downtown area may notice some extra sprucing up this year. The city’s Public Works Department has painted new crosswalk stencils. Designs range from flowers to snowflakes and even an outline of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge. They can be found all across Lakeshore Drive.

AHMEEK — Last Thursday, officials with the Department of Environmental Quality addressed a gathering of about 30 people at the Allouez Township Community Center regarding enforcement action the DEQ is initiating against Ahmeek-based Neuvokas Corp. The actions are in response to numerous complaints with the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy from local residents regarding intense and frequent odor emitted during its manufacturing process over the past three years.

City of Hancock announces multiple summer infrastructure projects, advises community
HANCOCK, Mich. (WLUC) - Four summer infrastructure projects are underway across Hancock, and the city wants residents and visitors to keep them in mind as they travel. The first is a city-wide sewer improvement project. MJO Contracting will be digging down to line, inspect and/or replace sewers in multiple locations.
South Range celebration is Copper Country tradition
SOUTH RANGE — The village of South Range has another great Fourth of July celebration planned for this year which, as always, promises to be a traditional event. Activities include a flag raising and Flag Pole Dedication to Veterans, horseshoe and cornhole tournaments, live music, an Old Photo Gallery, children’s races and more. Hopscotch in Hancock
Hancock artist Rebecca Paavo puts the finishing touches on a hopscotch piece on the sidewalk in front of Quincy Green Thursday night. The theme, Summertime Hopping into Autumn, will be complemented by a piece on the other side of Quincy Green depicting Winter Hopping into Spring. Paavo had put in about 20 hours on the design, which will need to be roped off for another 72 hours before kids can jump on it.
