HANCOCK — With the defending champions, Shottle Bop out of the mix before the semifinals, this weekend appeared to be the best chance that Monte Carlo has had to win a Guts Frisbee title on their home turf. Open house to showcase Eagle Harbor Life Saving Station
The Eagle Harbor Life Saving Station Museum is inviting the public to its open house from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Refreshments will be available. Before the U.S. Coast Guard, there was the United States Life Saving Service. The Lifesaving Service was a volunteer, and was proud of its motto: “You have to go out, but you don’t have to come back.” The purpose of the service was, simply, to save the lives of shipwrecked sailors.
Weekend exhibit spotlights work of Brian Hirvela
On Saturday morning, I went to the Calumet Farmer’s Market to pick up some delicious sourdough bread, Vietnamese Garlic Noodles and a book by Deborah Frontiera. Afterward, I stopped by the Calumet Art Center in the Big Green Church. I saw the beautiful stained glass piece representing the Quincy Mine that used to be in the McDonalds, now the Den, in downtown Houghton. Then I saw this large awe-inspiring sailboat made out of stones, driftwood and wire, by Brian Hirvela.
Six Berry Farms in Chassell Provide the Strawberry Festival’s Full Ton of Strawberries.
The berry farms in Chassell have provided sweet treats to residents of the Upper Peninsula for many years. Before the rise of California’s agriculture, many of Chassell grown berries would find their way grocers and markets in Chicago and much of the Midwest. There are six farms still in operation today that mainly distribute to areas of the Upper Peninsula and Northern Wisconsin.
