Lake Superior’s reputation for stormy waters lends the need for life-saving operations around coastal towns. With the advancement of new technology and longer ranges, the U.S. Coast Guard eventually abandoned several small stations. Such as the Life Saving Station in Eagle Harbor that served the Keweenaw Peninsula from 1915 to 1950. In the years since the Keweenaw County Historical Society has taken ownership of the site, as one of its several museum sites preserving local history.

Marquette artist’s ‘Finding Relief Printing’ exhibit now open at Copper Country Community Arts Center
HANCOCK, Mich. (WLUC) - The Copper Country Community Arts Center (CCCAC)’s newest art exhibit is now on display in its gallery in Hancock. Titled the ‘Finding Relief Printing,’ it features the work of Marquette artist and U.P native Dave Berg. He has been an artist for five years, with his work being featured in exhibitions across the U.P. and even in France.
‘A good time’ in South Range
SOUTH RANGE — The village of South Range celebrated its annual Fourth of July parade that it has had ongoing since 1906. The parade began in front of South Range Elementary before heading into the heart of the village. For this year’s parade, a handful of floats with different groups and organizations participated. The floats featured a 50-year alumni group from Jeffers High School, a few political organization vehicles, and a Fourth of July-themed cake. The participants on the floats were throwing out candy, popsicles and other treats to the parade observers.

Eagle Harbor residents and visitors enjoy 55th annual Fourth of July celebration
EAGLE HARBOR, Mich. (WLUC) - A bright and sunny morning welcomed roughly 500 residents and visitors to Eagle Harbor as it kicked off its township fourth of July celebration. This celebration has been held since 1969, for 55 years. Today’s celebration began with a parade through town, with many riding in golf carts and fire trucks, dressed up in a variety of costumes. Then, there was a costume contest before people could enjoy games in the township Ball Yard.
Obituary: Peter Joe Laxo
Peter Joe Laxo, age 69, of Hancock, Michigan passed away unexpectedly at home May 30, 2024. Peter was born Dec. 31, 1954 to Axel and Immi Laxo. He lived the majority of his childhood in Republic, Michigan (A few years were spent living in Kellogg, Idaho.) Peter attended Republic-Michigamme Schools where he was very active in baseball and basketball. He graduated in 1973. Work at the shipyards brought him to Sturgeon Bay where he lived for many years. Peter moved back to Michigan and lived in Ishpeming, Republic and the last 15 years in Hancock.
