Houghton Beautification Committee, Public Works work to beautify downtown Houghton
HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) - Visitors to Houghton’s downtown area may notice some extra sprucing up this year. The city’s Public Works Department has painted new crosswalk stencils. Designs range from flowers to snowflakes and even an outline of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge. They can be found all across Lakeshore Drive.

Hopscotch in Hancock
Hancock artist Rebecca Paavo puts the finishing touches on a hopscotch piece on the sidewalk in front of Quincy Green Thursday night. The theme, Summertime Hopping into Autumn, will be complemented by a piece on the other side of Quincy Green depicting Winter Hopping into Spring. Paavo had put in about 20 hours on the design, which will need to be roped off for another 72 hours before kids can jump on it.
Hancock bookstore hosts meet and greet with Michigan author
A bookstore in Hancock hosted Amy Piper and her new book, “Secret Michigan: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure” on Thursday. The author meet and greet was hosted at Sunflower Books and Coffee, allowing local readers to talk with Piper about her book and receive signed copies.

CALUMET — Dennis K. Polzien, 72, of Calumet passed away unexpectedly at his home on Friday, June 21, 2024. Dennis was born on April 20, 1952 in Roscommon Township, Michigan to Edwin and Marian Polzien. He was an honor graduate of Gladwin High School and attended Michigan Tech University where he played football and earned a degree in Forestry.
South Range celebration is Copper Country tradition
SOUTH RANGE — The village of South Range has another great Fourth of July celebration planned for this year which, as always, promises to be a traditional event. Activities include a flag raising and Flag Pole Dedication to Veterans, horseshoe and cornhole tournaments, live music, an Old Photo Gallery, children’s races and more. In fact, with some 17 events and activities scheduled, there are too many to list in this limited space.

EAGLE Harbor — The annual Keweenaw County Public Safety Day, which took place Saturday, added a new element to the festivities. This year, the day began with a 5K run/walk, Shine the Light 4 Healthy Minds. The race was put on by Keweenaw Support 4 Healthy Minds, in conjunction with the Keweenaw County Sheriff Department and Keweenaw Community Foundation. Shine the Light 4 Healthy Minds was a fundraiser for KS4M.

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church fundraiser underway for student meal kitchen upgrades
HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) - The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Houghton is asking for donations for upgrades to its kitchen. Michigan Tech University (MTU) students who are part of the church’s campus ministry began a weekly student meals program last fall to help out their fellow students. Roughly 600 meals were served across the school year.
City of Hancock announces multiple summer infrastructure projects, advises community
