MSP & K-9 track down man who fled scene of crash
A Michigan State Police trooper from Alpena and his K-9 helped track down a suspect in Oscoda who allegedly fled the scene of an automobile crash last month. Trooper Scruggs and his canine partner, Waco, responded to the area of Abbe Road near Eming Road in Comins Township on May 27, to track a 38 year-old man who was allegedly involved in an auto crash and then fled from Oscoda County Sheriff’s Office deputies who were on scene.

ALDI Grand Opening in Alpena Opens to Much Support from the Community
The grand opening of ALDI was big business in Alpena, with lines wrapped around the building all the way out of the parking lot. ALDI gave away free gifts and prizes that had some people standing in line since before dawn. “We were here at 4:30 a.m. Another couple and us pretty much the first hour. Thomas Richard Nowak, 85, of Alpena passed away Sunday, June 2, 2024, at his home. Thomas was born January 14, 1939, in Alpena to the late Stephen “Jasper” and Celia (Filipiak) Nowak. He married Jeanne Kollien on April 8, 1967, at St. Mary Catholic Church. Thomas worked at Great North Foods for 60+ years and was co-owner of Jeanne’s Sweet Shop. He served in the United States Army. Thomas was an active member of Haass hunting club for 50+ years, Knights of Columbus for 52 years, Lions Club, and trained four leader dogs for the blind. He volunteered at MyMichigan Medical Center – Alpena.

Hillman continues to dominate, set records on way to regional title
The Hillman softball team entered Saturday's Division 4 regional round as heavy favorites, having steamrolled their way to a district crown the week before. Saturday was business as usual and even sub-par weather conditions couldn't slow down the Tigers offense as they defeated Rudyard 12-1 in five innings in the regional semifinal, and needed just four innings to dismantle Inland Lakes 17-2 to claim a regional title.
Gaylord, Evart, Clare and Hillman all lock up softball semifinal spots
The MHSAA softball quarterfinals were settled on Tuesday and we had four area teams lock up big victories to advance to later in the week. Gaylord is the defending state champion in Division 2 as the Blue Devils dismantled Muskegon Oakridge in the quarterfinals 18-1 in four innings. Next up for Gaylord will be Milan in the semifinals on Thursday at 3pm.
