Controversial rocker Ted Nugent has responded to Pearl Jam as they performed Nugent’s 1975 single “ Stranglehold ”  at the CFG Bank Arena in Baltimore, MD on September 12th. The band changed the lyrics to make it an anti-g*n anthem.

    Ted Nugent responds

Nugent expressed his displeasurewith Pearl Jam’s take on the song. In a tweet responding to the cover, he invited Vedder. He wrote:

“hey Eddie join me on my RAV spirit campfire to discuss how your insane liberal policies have created an explosion in engineered viol**t recidivism while you fight to disarm helpless innocent citizens.”

Pearl Jam’s concert in Baltimore on Thursday, September 12 featured several fan favorites. However, roughly halfway through their set, guitarist Mike McCready launched into “Stranglehold”’s familiar opening riff.

Frontman Eddie Vedder then joined in, singing:

“I don’t own a g*n, I don’t ever want to own a gun / I don’t own a gun, never want to own a gun.” After repeating variations of the phrase several times, the tones of “Stanglehold” faded out. Once they were done, Vedder didn’t comment any further on the song. The band soon launched into their own classic “Even Flow.”

“Stranglehold” was the first track on Nugent’s self-titled debut album. The tune’s famous guitar solo is widely regarded as one of the greatest in rock history.

Nugent has been a candid right-wing conservative and he often advocates for the rights of g*n ownership. He even took his love for the weapons on television, briefly hosting the series Ted Nugent’s Gun Country on the Discovery Channel.

At the time of the show’s debut, Nugent declared that the “American Dream is measured in ballistics.” In 2021, the polarizing rocker released a pro-gun song called “Come and Take It.”

Ahead of the upcoming presidential election, Pearl Jam is using its platform to encourage fans to vote, providing links to make voter registration and status checks easier.

“This year, and every year is an election year,” the band said in its campaign, “We believe our democracy — and our country — is strongest when every voice is heard and everyone participates.”
