Alex Van Halen revealed to Rolling Stone that he suffered a bad spinal injury a few years ago and was struggling to walk, and couldn’t play drums. He’s starting to play again and is walking with a limp.

“Had you seen me six months ago,” he says, “you’d go, man, I’m in sad shape.”

“You know DARPA, the defense arm? They have robotic stuff that you can do, exoskeletons and all that. I was looking into that — because worst comes to worst, I’ll get one of those. I’ll jump in it.” Like Iron Man? He grins. “Bingo.”

Alex realized his spine was in bad shape at a shooting range in 2022, “The rifle kicked me on my ass, and broke my back, instantly. And then I spent a year on the floor. Just staring at the ceiling. We became best friends.”

“Pain is good for you. When you’re looking at the ceiling, lots of times it can be philosophical. They say life is suffering. If you don’t get what you want, you suffer. Even when you get exactly what you want, you still suffer, because you can’t hold on to it forever. Your mind wants to be free of change, free of pain.… But change is law, and no amount of pretending will alter that reality.”

Van Halen singer David Lee Roth has been releasing music he wrote with John 5 years back recently, and John 5 has been making big moves, recently joining Motley Crue. John 5 has stated that Rob Zombie’s transition from him to Mike Riggs was “weird.”

John 5 opens up on not talking with Rob Zombie

He has noted that he hasn’t spoken with his former boss since leaving to join Mötley Crüe, even though he asserts they parted ways on good terms.

A few years ago, John 5 had a childhood dream come true when he was asked to join Mötley Crüe as a touring replacement for Mick Mars . John 5, whose real name is John William Lowery, has since become a full member of the band.

This arrangement worked well for everyone involved — Mötley Crüe gained a young and skilled guitarist who already knew all their songs by heart, and Mick Mars approved of the choice. Furthermore, John 5 was able to avoid the conflicts between his current bandmates and his successor.

However, joining the Crüe meant saying farewell to Rob Zombie, with whom John 5 had been playing for 17 years. During a recent interview with Jamey Jasta on the Hatebreed frontman’s “The Jasta Show” , John 5 says he hasn’t spoken with his former boss since:

“We’re not on bad terms. And Rob wished me well. And he was, like, ‘Go get ’em,’ and all that stuff. So we’re not on bad terms, but we just have not spoke; we haven’t spoken to each other. But he’s doing great. He’s got a great new band, and he’s kicking ass out there. But we just haven’t talked. I don’t think there’s any bad blood or anything. I mean, 17 years and things like that, but it was just time to…”

“I wanna live my life, and to get an opportunity at this stage is a pretty rare opportunity. So I just want to see so many more things.”

    The guitarist added:

“I’m never gonna retire — I guarantee you that; I’ll never retire, but I just wanna do so much more.”
