ROANOKE, Va. ( WFXR ) – The SRO GT World Challenge is gearing up for this weekend’s races at the Virginia International Raceway ( VIR ) with some of the industry’s top drivers, like Blacksburg native James Clay and high-performing cars including Toyota GR86 and Ferrari.

The Fanatec GT World Challenge is an international championship organized by SRO Motorsports Group. Races take place from Friday, July 19 through July Sunday, July 21 at VIR in Alton, and will feature more than 100 drivers.

James Clay joined WFXR News to give a preview of what fans can expect during the race and highlight some of his car’s features.

“So, performance-wise. This is a little bit faster, but identifiable, it’s the same car that you have potentially in your garage, especially with the Porsches Audis, Acura, Aston, Martins, Lamborghinis, Ferraris, a wide range of stuff we’ve got at the track.” – James Clay

James said there will be lots of different types of races for anyone who wants to come, including fast cars, slow cars, exotics, and “all kinds of cool stuff.”

“We are fortunate in southwest, Virginia to have an amazing facility like the VIR and so it’s coming to our backyard,” said James. “For road courses, VIR is the one, and so, otherwise we’re traveling two to three hours for something that is decent, but really we are traveling throughout the country for something as spectacular as the one we have in our backyard.”

Fans will be able to get an up-and-close experience to watch the races, with a variety of vantage points around the track. There will also be a team meet and greet opportunity available in the paddock area and kids will be able to sit in the car to learn as much about racing as they want.

Clay said that he wanted to be a racer while he was in high school, and wants to let kids or anyone who may be interested or thinking about getting into racing know, “It’s something you can do, just dig in.”
