New stores to open in former Kmart location in Altoona

ALTOONA, Pa. (WTAJ) — A couple of new stores are coming to the former Kmart building in Altoona along Plank Road.

Since Kmart closed the building was purchased by Rural King who has plans to open a new location. They also have gotten a permit to transform the right side of the building into a discount grocery store.

Chairman of the Logan Township supervisors, James Patterson, says that above all else it’s nice to see stores returning to the empty building.

“We’re just excited after Kmart has been out of the scene here for probably at least five years or longer, we’re just happy somebody is finally moving in and it improves our tax base. Tax base helps the residents, and everything else helps our costs,” Patterson said.

As of this moment, there is no timeline for when work will begin on the new stores.
