ALTOONA, Pa. (WTAJ) — A weekend event at the Jaffa Shrine in Altoona worked to raise money for an organization that helps low-income families.

On Saturday, July 27, ‘Vegas Night’ took place to raise money for the Gloria Gates Memorial Foundation . The foundation was established in 1999 and offers after-school programs and summer activities for children ages 5-12 living in low-income housing.

They aim to encourage better school performance and build self-esteem and moral character.

“It’s not kids that are from like third world countries and other states. They’re right here in our own backyard. It’s really important to be able to take care of the people that are here, and especially when it comes to kids,” Denise Stone, an organizer for the Vegas Night fundraiser said.
