100 Years Ago: James W. Helme will oppose Earl C. Michener again for place in Congress
July 26, 1924: Petitions will be circulated by leading Democrats in the county to put James W. Helme of Adrian in candidacy for Congress as a result of a conference held here last evening. In attendance at the gathering, which was purely informal, were Horatio Abbott, former Ann Arbor postmaster, John Miner of Jackson, another well known party member of the Second Congressional district and Edward Frensdorf of Hudson, candidate for Governor. Prosecuting Attorney Henry Bourns, Sheriff William Beasley, James H. Baker, Michael L. Gillen, and Mr. Helme were among Adrian residents who participated in the council. A complete ticket will be put in the field for state legislative and county officers as a result of the decision reached at the meeting, it was stated today. Mr. Miner, who was a second district delegate at the national convention, has been regarded as a probable candidate for Congress to oppose the Republican incumbent, Earl C. Michener. He told the conference last night that he would not enter. “I’m afraid I would be elected, and I honestly do not want to go to Congress” was the way in which Mr. Miner was reported to have worded his statement. As a result of his definite withdrawal, the men in conference at once formulated plans for the circulation of the Helme petitions. John C. Calahan of Wyandotte, another prospective candidate for the office, is also thought by local Democrats to have given up his intentions, leaving a clear field for Mr. Helme in the primary. Mr. Helme was a candidate against Mr. Michener in the district election of two years ago, polling 33,393 votes to Mr. Michener’s 31,509.
