    Author Q&A

What inspired you to write your first book?

I really felt the need to be better understood, to be better known. While my life has not been “typical”, I also know there are many people out there that have lived or are living with family trauma and dysfunction. My hope is they’ll find inspiration in my story, but also know that they’re not alone.

How did you come up with the title?

The title RAISING WRENNS is rooted in my family name, Wrenn, but it’s also a play on words. It’s a nod to the bird species, wren, which is quite an interesting bird. Wrens are complex -

They’re scrappy little birds renowned for the way they flitter from place to place, building nests wherever they land: in old leather boots, sawed off soup cans, cardboard boxes, or old drain pipes. In short, my parents were raising wren(n)s!

Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

Yes! Raising Wrenns is indeed my life story. It is also a literary memoir, incorporating fantastical and scientific stories that compare my family’s world and personality traits with those of wrens, woven between the pages of my life story

What books/authors have influenced your writing?

Jeanette Walls' The Glass Castle has been a significant influence on my writing. I adored her approach to storytelling through the eyes of a child; it was a beautiful way of narrating sometimes gut-wrenching stories through an innocent lens. I've tried to honor that power of storytelling in my memoir, Raising Wrenns.

What was the hardest part of writing your book?

The hardest part of writing Raising Wrenns was taking on a bit of the role of detective. I was looking to uncover truths, and sometimes those truths were unexpected, even surprising, and emotionally difficult to process.

What is your favorite positive saying?

I wholeheartedly believe that small moments can have a big impact on someone’s life. While I’ve had to navigate a great deal of family dysfunction and trauma in my early life, there were also bright spots – seemingly “small moments” that had a big impact and left a meaningful, lifelong impression on me. Those moments kept my heart and mind open to all of the good still out there in the world.
