    Author Q&A

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

I’d say there is no one core message for everyone as it was never intended. But I do hope readers could experience the emotions in the novel to explore what truly matters for them in life and even get their own ideas about humanity. As a writer, I’m more thrilled to learn what my readers learn from reading my work.

Do you see writing as a career?

More than that. Writing is my key to life. When I’m sad, I write. When I’m feeling creative, I write. When I want to capture life moments, guess what? I write so I could remember what I felt.

What has influenced you the most as a writer?

People. I like talking to people, listening to their stories, observing their reactions... As a writer, it always gives me pleasure to find out people’s little “quirks” because it helps me understand them better. In a way, people are my fountain of inspiration. I write about them because I’m interested in them.

What inspired you to write your first book?

People’s struggle? Everywhere I go, everyone I meet, I see struggles. And that’s where you find stories. The thing is I was inspired to write this book in English though it’s not my native language. Born and raised in Taiwan, I chose to write in English because it is ridiculous we don’t have any English writing to represent Taiwanese literature. Do you know that back in the days when Taiwan was colonized by Japanese government in early 20th century, the so-called Taiwanese literature was mostly composed in Japanese language? Why? Because people received education in Japanese. Now take a look at our public school curriculums. You will find English classes as many as Chinese classes. If this serves as any indicator, shouldn’t we at least see some representation of Taiwanese literature in English?

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

Sure. I actually established a publishing company that aims to promote ESL writers in Asia. Beside working on my own writings, I’m actively discovering talented writers, illustrators, comic artists who aspire to create in English as a second language, and collaborating with them on different book projects. In a foreseeable future, I’m planning to adapt their works into movies or animations so that they could be seen by more people. Meanwhile, it is very important we encourage ESL students to write and create so I’m also training ESL teachers to reinvent English classrooms in Taiwan, hoping to see a great momentum of ESL writing arise.

What is your favorite movie and why?

Definitely. Definitely the Lord of the Rings trilogy. It pulls my heart string. It sheds light in my dark. It pumps air into my inflated days. I’ve watched the trilogy more than a hundred times, and it never loses its magic on me. That’s the definition of one true great masterpiece.

Do you feel like it’s most important to have A) Strong characters B) Mind-blowing Plot twists or C) Epic settings?

Strong characters are the basement of a great story. You can have mind-blowing plot twists or epic setting but with poor characters, you have mediocre story at best. It is the characters that determine whether a story would be remembered or not.

Which famous person, living or dead, would you like to meet and why?

Someone famous? I’d like to meet the person who will invent teleport in the future. I mean just imagining the story this person could tell gives me goose bumps.
