    Q&A

What inspired you to write your first book?

While studying Schizophrenia as part of a medical anthropology course at the University of Chicago, I realized that the challenges this illness poses are universal across cultures and demographics. I noticed a gap in recent children’s literature addressing this topic, which sparked the idea for my first book, Uncle Jay Has a Boo-Boo. That’s when the concept began to take shape.

What book are you reading now?

I’m currently reading How We Die by Dr. Sherwin B. Nuland. His near-photographic memory for detail makes his account both compelling and powerful.

    What are your current projects?

I’m working on a book of poetry that’s currently in its second round of editing, as well as two children’s books, each at different stages of production.

Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?

I’ve learned that the final draft will often differ significantly from the initial one after it’s been reviewed by various editors—and I’m grateful for that. The process keeps me on my toes and ultimately results in a better final product. I’ve come to appreciate the evolution of the draft.
    How do you relax?

I wander to wind down—a flâneur, if you will. It helps me consolidate my thoughts.

If you had to give up either snacks and drinks during writing sessions, or music, which would you find more difficult to say goodbye to?

    Music, without a doubt.

What does being a successful author look like to you?

To me, success is found in the act of creation itself, while staying in a state of play.

Do you have any writing buddies?

    My cats, Cyrus and Sybil.

Lumilore is available for purchase on Amazon.
