Sanford-Fritch's Wiggins, Dumas' Hernandez voted Happy State Bank athletes of the week

Sanford-Fritch's William Wiggins and Dumas' Hannah Hernandez have been voted the Happy State Bank Male and Female High School Athlete of the Week for March 4-9.

Wiggins won three gold medals at the Longhorn Relays in Vega, claiming first in the 100, 400 and anchoring the 1,600 relay.

Hernandez won the 105 class with a total lift of 845 lbs., leading Dumas girls powerlifting to the Region 1 4A Large School Team Championship.

Wiggins received 16,403 of the 26,463 votes cast for male athlete of the week, which was 62% of total votes.

Hernandez drew 15,129 of the 18,892 votes cast for female athlete of the week, which was 80.1% of total votes.

Students in all varsity sports are eligible and can only be named Athlete of the Week one time per season, per sport, and athletes from one school cannot win more than three consecutive weeks.

Nominations are due by 5 p.m. each Monday and can be submitted through email at sports@amarillo.com.
