A sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) at the Lift Station No. 4, located at 920 N Louisiana St., took place over the weekend and has been contained, the city of Amarillo reported Monday afternoon.

According to a city news release, the spill began at about 6 a.m. and was contained at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10. The city said the overflow "was caused by a mechanical failure resulting from the heavy rains."

The city said the lift station overflowed approximately 200,000 gallons of untreated sewage out onto dry land and the bar ditch, but it did not reach any natural waters.

Clean-up of the area is complete, "including vacuum removal of excess untreated wastewater and application of HTH to clean remaining residual wastewater," the city said. "The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has been notified and is working with the city to minimize environmental impacts."
